Understanding Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and Complete Sexual Health Protection

Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, has revolutionized HIV prevention. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is up to 99% effective at preventing HIV transmission through sex and significantly reduces risk through injection drug use. It's a powerful tool—but it's not a complete shield.

What PrEP Does

PrEP is a daily medication (or on-demand dosing in some cases) specifically designed to prevent HIV infection. It works by blocking the virus from establishing itself in your body if you're exposed. For people at higher risk of HIV exposure—including those with HIV-positive partners, multiple sexual partners, or inconsistent condom use—PrEP can be life-changing.

What PrEP Doesn't Protect Against

Here's the critical part: PrEP only protects against HIV. It offers zero protection against other sexually transmitted infections, including:

- Chlamydia

- Gonorrhea (including antibiotic-resistant strains)

- Syphilis

- Herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2)

- Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

- Hepatitis B and C

- Trichomoniasis

- Mycoplasma genitalium

The Bottom Line

PrEP is an excellent HIV prevention strategy, but it's just one layer of protection. For comprehensive sexual health:

✓ Combine PrEP with barrier methods (condoms, dental dams)

✓ Get tested regularly for all STIs—every 3-6 months if sexually active

✓ Communicate openly with partners about testing and status

✓ Stay informed about your sexual health through regular check-ups

PrEP empowers you to take control of HIV prevention. Pairing it with regular testing and honest conversations creates a truly comprehensive approach to sexual wellness.
